Eta

This is my latest iPad painting, once again using my handy  2-in-1 Targus stylus and Procreate. Very special thanks goes out to Eta (the model) and my good friend, Caterina, who introduced me to her. Both are immensely talented artists. Check out their work here:

Work in Progress

Aida Detail

Many people see the final drawing before I move onto a finished painting – but few ever get to see what that drawing looks like once I transfer it onto the watercolor paper. All of my problem solving is done on small pencil sketches leading up to the final drawing (see HERE) but the real details are added once I transfer that drawing to the watercolor paper. I mount a blown-up copy of the final drawing to the back of the watercolor paper and use it as a road map while I re-draw the entire composition – once again from the photographic reference. This gives me the opportunity to “flesh” out the details and lay down a system of lines that later communicate how the paint will be applied. It’s a slow and methodical process but it ensures that by the time I start the underpainting I’ve accounted for as many variables as possible.

Juxtapoz Magazine

I just found out through the grapevine that my work was featured on Juxtapoz Magazine’s Website today. I have to say – I’ve been a fan of Juxtapoz for a long time so personally, this is pretty huge. I’d like to thank the folks at Juxtapoz, especially the Erotica Editor, Hannah Stouffer, for  considering my work and sharing it with the world. Very appreciated.

In related news, I’ve just updated my site with a Press page and a new Projects section showcasing my work for Arts Not Fair. Check it out.

Installation at ARTS|Not Fair

Installation shots for ARTS|Not Fair, opening Friday, March 9th, at Like the Spice Gallery. These were taken with my phone and therefore are not faithful representations of color. They do, however, give a sneak peek into what will be unveiled this weekend.

ARTS|Not Fair

ARTS|Not Fair

It’s Armory Week and as the Art Elite descend upon NYC for a maelström of VIP after parties and back room dealings I am installing my contribution to Like the Spice’s inaugural mini-fair, ARTS|Not Fair.

Offering an alternative to the usual suspects of Armory Week, ARTS|Not Fair dares to question: “What do you do at art fairs? Try to steal a pass, struggle to find the lounge, squeeze into the V.I.P. room and maybe, maybe manage to find a couple pieces of art that don’t make you want to roll your eyes. And then it’s off to the after-party for handshakes and fun and it’s all forgotten until Miami. Doesn’t it leave you wanting something a little more intimate? Something different?”

ARTS|Not Fair opens this Friday, March 9th with a Press Preview from 4-6pm, followed by a VIP Preview event from 6-9pm.

The Opening Reception (open to the public) will be on Saturday, March 10th, from 6-10pm. The opening party will feature special performances and panels in conjunction with Brooklyn Armory Night.

Regular Show hours: Saturday, March 10th, 12-7pm and Sunday, March 11th, 12 – 7pm.

Once the fairs close and leave town, ARTS|Not Fair will be extended through April 1st, 2012.

Digital Painting on the iPad

Karen on the iPad

Ever since David Kassan showed me a time-lapse video of his first iPad painting I’ve been dying to try it for myself. After a long wait, I finally got my hands on an iPad and started experimenting over the holidays. Thus far I’ve used Sketchbook Express, ArtRage and my app of choice, Procreate. I’ve also tried out a few different stylus’, preferring the hand-held approach to the ‘finger painting’ method. At the moment I’m using a Targus 2-in-1 Executive Stylus which combines a conductive touch-screen nib with a traditional roller ball pen.

Recently, the good folks over at Targus caught wind of my doodling and asked to interview me about integrating the iPad into my work. You can check it out here: Artist Pushes Creative Boundaries With Apple iPad.

Music To Paint To

I’ve always loved music. As a kid my father would routinely break out his vast record collection and educate me on the likes of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Earth, Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder, The Clash, Cat Stevens, David Bowie, Jethro Tull, Joy Division, John Coltrane and many, many others. As I grew up I consumed music, sampling everything from Bluegrass to House to the sounds of the Middle East and India. Needless to say my music tastes today are a bit varied.

Music is an integral part of my work process and to that end I’ve decided to start sharing what I listen to here on the blog. This first installment is a DJ set perfect for rallying when fatigue sets in. Play it when you need to stay up for an all-nighter or kick ass at the gym. It comes courtesy of Per Qx, a Swedish DJ and Producer based in London. Enjoy.
